A Man with a Vision

Gerald E. Schneider was a respected neuroscientist and longtime professor at MIT, where he taught brain-behavior relationships, brain anatomy, and animal behavior starting in 1968.

Now remembered for his academic contributions and deeply personal insights, he was the author of Brain Structure and Its Origins and Phantom Manipulator of the Brain. Living with type 1 diabetes for over six decades, Schneider chronicled his journey that revealed how low blood sugar can dramatically alter perception, emotion, and identity. His work bridges science and self, leaving a powerful legacy of knowledge and empathy. Gerald passed away from lung cancer in December 2024. His wife, Amy, helped with the final steps to get the book published.
